Janakpur is about 120km south east of Kathmandu. Hindu legend holds that in the mythical past. Janakpur was the capital of ancient Mithila and the birth place of Mother Sita, consort of Lord Rama, hero of the Ramayana. The Janaki Temple is dedicated to Mother Sita and is a Site of pilgrimage for Hindus form all over the subcontinent. The temple is an artistic marble temple and is popularly known as "Nowlakha Mandir" Built by a queen of Tikamgarh in 1910 and is well planned city and once a major center of learning.
